Editorial Board

Scholarly Expertise. Editorial Integrity. Academic Cooperation.

Our Editorial Structure

Vox Dei Institute Press (VDIP) is developing an editorial team and Editorial Board to support its Christian educational mission and scholarly publishing program.

Our structure distinguishes Editorial Leadership, responsible for administering the publishing process and making authorized editorial decisions, from Editorial Board Members, who contribute disciplinary expertise, scholarly advice, and academic cooperation.

The positions described on this page are editorial appointments. They do not, by themselves, confer corporate office, governing-board membership, or authority to bind VDIP contractually.

We seek qualified scholars in theology, apologetics, biblical studies, church history, philosophy of religion, ethics, and related disciplines. Appointments will reflect the expertise and participation needed for the Press’s publishing activities, rather than a predetermined board size.

Names, qualifications, areas of expertise, and affiliations will be published after appointments are confirmed and permission to display the information has been obtained. Positions will be filled as the Press’s needs and resources develop.

Editorial Leadership

  • Editor-in-Chief
  • Associate Editor
  • Managing Editor
  • Assistant Editor

Editorial Board Members

Confirmed members will be listed alphabetically by surname.

Responsibilities of Editorial Leadership

Editor-in-Chief

The Editor-in-Chief provides overall scholarly leadership and oversees the integrity of VDIP’s editorial processes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Guiding the scholarly direction and development of the publishing program.
  • Overseeing editorial standards, submission procedures, and publication-ethics policies.
  • Coordinating the selection and appointment of editors and Board members under VDIP’s authorized appointment procedures.
  • Assigning qualified handling editors and ensuring appropriate reviewer selection.
  • Making or delegating final scholarly decisions on submissions.
  • Ensuring that conflicts of interest are disclosed and appropriately managed.
  • Overseeing responses to ethical concerns, complaints, and appeals through the applicable procedures.
  • Supporting consistent communication with authors, reviewers, and editorial personnel.

The Editor-in-Chief must not control the evaluation or acceptance of their own work. Matters involving their conduct or a relevant conflict must be assigned to another qualified, authorized person without that conflict.

Associate Editor

An Associate Editor supports the Editor-in-Chief and exercises scholarly judgment within an assigned subject area or publication project.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assessing submissions for scholarly suitability and readiness for peer review.
  • Identifying qualified, independent reviewers.
  • Coordinating peer review and evaluating the reports received.
  • Communicating substantive revision requirements to authors.
  • Assessing revised manuscripts and author responses.
  • Recommending editorial decisions or making decisions within expressly delegated authority.
  • Identifying claims requiring additional specialist review.
  • Referring ethical concerns or unresolved conflicts through the appropriate editorial channels.

Associate Editors must distinguish scholarly requirements from personal preferences and work within the limits of their expertise.

Within VDIP, the title Associate Editor will generally be used for a role involving substantive scholarly evaluation and delegated editorial judgment. Responsibilities and authority will be specified in the appointment.

Managing Editor

Where appointed, the Managing Editor coordinates the administration of the publishing process.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Maintaining submission records and tracking manuscript versions.
  • Coordinating correspondence with authors, editors, and reviewers.
  • Monitoring agreed deadlines and communicating delays.
  • Organizing review reports, author responses, and decision records.
  • Coordinating the transition from acceptance to editing and production.
  • Maintaining accurate publication information and editorial documentation.

The Managing Editor does not acquire authority to accept or reject manuscripts solely by holding this title. Any scholarly decision-making authority must be separately assigned.

Assistant Editor

Where appointed, an Assistant Editor supports editorial administration and manuscript preparation under the supervision of an authorized editor.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Checking submissions for completeness and compliance with instructions.
  • Assisting with correspondence, scheduling, and manuscript tracking.
  • Checking references, formatting, and editorial consistency within their competence.
  • Preparing materials for review or production.
  • Supporting copyediting and proofreading.

An Assistant Editor must refer substantive scholarly concerns to the handling editor. The role does not automatically include authority to make publication decisions.

Responsibilities of Editorial Board Members

Editorial Board Members contribute subject expertise and advice that support the quality, integrity, and development of VDIP’s publications.

Depending on their expertise and agreed responsibilities, members may:

  • Advise on the scope and scholarly direction of the publishing program.
  • Recommend relevant research topics, publication projects, and qualified contributors.
  • Help identify suitable independent peer reviewers.
  • Provide peer-review reports when qualified, independent, and free from relevant conflicts.
  • Advise on disciplinary standards and emerging scholarly developments.
  • Assist with publication-ethics questions when appropriately appointed.
  • Encourage constructive engagement among different Christian traditions and academic disciplines.
  • Help the Press identify gaps in its disciplinary coverage.

Membership does not require involvement in every publication or endorsement of every argument published by VDIP.

Board membership alone does not authorize a member to accept manuscripts, make commitments on behalf of the Press, or act as its spokesperson.

Qualifications and Selection

Appointments are based on demonstrated expertise, scholarly integrity, and willingness to undertake the responsibilities of the role.

Relevant qualifications may include advanced academic study, teaching, research, publications, editorial experience, or equivalent disciplinary competence. Academic titles alone do not determine suitability.

VDIP welcomes qualified scholars from different Christian denominations and academic settings. Members must assess scholarship fairly and distinguish legitimate disciplinary standards from personal theological or philosophical preferences.

The Board will develop according to the Press’s publication needs. Complementary expertise, dependable participation, and responsible judgment take priority over the number of names listed.

Independent Peer Review and Editorial Decisions

Editorial Board participation does not replace independent peer review.

Board members serving as reviewers must meet the same requirements as other reviewers, including subject competence, independence, confidentiality, and disclosure of conflicts. The handling editor’s own assessment does not count as an independent reviewer report.

Final scholarly decisions rest with the authorized, non-conflicted handling editor under VDIP’s editorial procedures. Editorial Board advice informs those decisions but does not automatically determine them.

Submissions authored or coauthored by editorial personnel or Board members must be handled independently. Authors must not select the final reviewers, direct the evaluation, or determine acceptance of their own work.

Payment for editorial or production services must not determine scholarly acceptance.

Confidentiality and Responsible Use of Information

Editorial personnel and Board members must protect confidential manuscripts, review reports, correspondence, and other information entrusted to them.

They must not use unpublished material for personal advantage, circulate it without authorization, or involve additional readers without appropriate approval.

Confidential material must not be uploaded to generative AI or other external processing services without advance written authorization and any additional permissions and safeguards required by VDIP’s policies, applicable agreements, or law.

Confidentiality is subject to appropriately limited disclosures necessary to administer the editorial process, investigate concerns, obtain professional advice, or comply with applicable law or lawful process.

These responsibilities continue after an appointment or assignment ends.

Conflicts of Interest and Accountability

Editorial personnel and Board members must disclose relationships or interests that could reasonably affect, or appear to affect, their impartiality.

Relevant conflicts may include personal, financial, supervisory, collaborative, institutional, ecclesial, or professional relationships.

Where necessary, the person concerned must withdraw from the relevant assessment or decision. A qualified, non-conflicted person will be assigned to handle the matter.Concerns about editorial conduct are addressed through VDIP’s procedures. A person whose conduct is the subject of a complaint must not determine the outcome of that complaint.

Concerns about editorial conduct are addressed through VDIP’s Policies & Ethics procedures. A person whose conduct is the subject of a complaint must not determine the outcome of that complaint.

Appointments and Participation

Appointments are confirmed in writing through VDIP’s authorized appointment procedures. The appointment specifies the role, term, responsibilities, reporting relationship, and any delegated decision-making authority. Service is voluntary unless otherwise agreed in writing.

An appointment may involve an ongoing leadership role, general Board membership, or responsibility for a particular publication or subject area. Holding one position does not automatically confer the responsibilities or authority of another.

One person may hold more than one editorial role where appropriate. Combining roles does not remove requirements for independent peer review, conflict management, or separate handling of the person’s own submissions.

Members are expected to:

  • Accept assignments only when they have the expertise and availability to complete them.
  • Communicate promptly about delays, conflicts, or changes in availability.
  • Follow VDIP’s editorial and publication-ethics policies.
  • Keep their published qualifications and affiliations accurate.
  • Notify the Press when they wish to step down.

Appointments and responsibilities will be reviewed periodically in light of participation, disciplinary needs, and the development of the publishing program.

Appointments may be renewed by mutual written agreement. Resignation, nonrenewal, or termination will be handled according to the appointment terms, with appropriate arrangements for pending assignments, confidential materials, and outstanding editorial responsibilities.

Names, Affiliations, and Public Representation

VDIP will obtain permission before publishing members’ names, qualifications, affiliations, or biographical information. The public roster will be updated as appointments change.

Affiliations are provided for identification. They do not, by themselves, imply institutional sponsorship or endorsement of VDIP or its publications.

Only individuals expressly authorized to do so may make contractual commitments or issue statements on behalf of the Press.

Expressions of Interest

Scholars interested in serving in an editorial role or on the Editorial Board are welcome to contact VDIP through the Contact page.

Please provide:

  • A brief academic biography or curriculum vitae.
